What kind of man am I today?

This is a perfect “song of the week” for the day after Father’s Day.  I head the story behind this song a couple months ago and thought I would share it with you.   Here are the words of Sanctus Real’s Matt Hammitt:

My wife and I aren’t shy about sharing that we’ve had some pretty major struggles.  I think the challenge for me in the song, and for other men as well, is every time I hear it, every time I sing it, I ask myself, “What kind of man am I?”  Not yesterday, not tomorrow, what kind of man am I today?  Have I invested in my family emotionally, spiritually the way that God has called me to reach out to them and lead them?

Enjoy the song – it’s excellent.  Below the song I linked an  interview with Matt and his wife that can bring some encouragement to us I think.  Make sure you click that and spend a couple minutes watching their interview.

Song of the Week – Came to my Rescue

Sometimes the simplest songs can be very profound and meaningful. Sometimes we sing songs at church without even pondering what it is we’re singing. Take the time to ponder this one.

Falling on my knees in worship
Giving all I am to seek your face
Lord all I am is yours

My whole life
I place in your hands
God of Mercy
Humbled I bow down
In your presence at your throne

I called you answered
And you came to my rescue and I
I wanna be where you are

In my life be lifted high
In our world be lifted high
In our love be lifted high

This Is How We Know – Song of the Week

This is how we know
This is how we know what love is
Just one look at Your cross
And this is where we see
This is where we see how love works
For You surrendered Your all

And this is how we know
That You have loved us first
This is where we chose
To love you in return

Chorus
For You so loved the world
That You gave Your only son
Love amazing, so divine
We will love You in return
For this life that You give
For this death that You have died
Love amazing, so divine
We will love You in reply, Lord

This is how we know
This is how we know what love is
Just one look at Your cross
And this is where we see
This is where we see how love works
For You surrendered Your all

And this is how we know
That You have loved us first
This is where we chose
To love You in return

Chorus

Our love will be loud
Our love will be strong
Our love shall be hands and feet
That serve You in this world
So let us stay true
And let it endure
That You will be glorified
And worshiped and adored

Chorus

Savior of the world
King Jesus we love You
For we have been loved
King Jesus we love You
For we have been loved
King Jesus we love You
For we have been loved
King Jesus we love You
For we have been loved
We have been loved

Every New Day – Song of the Week

Five Iron Frenzy – one of my favorite bands ever.  This song is simply great. The version that is on “Proof that the Youth are Revolting” CD is the best version as well, unfortunately this isn’t it, but it’s a nice clean recording at least.

When I was young, the smallest trick of light,
Could catch my eye,
Then life was new and every new day,
I thought that I could fly.
I believed in what I hoped for,
And I hoped in things unseen,
I had wings and dreams could soar,
I just don’t feel like flying anymore.
When the stars threw down their spears,
Watered Heaven with their tears,
Before words were spoken,
Before eternity.

Dear Father, I need you,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to fly higher,
Every new day again.

When I was small, the furthest I could reach,
Was not so high,
Then I thought the world was so much smaller,
Feeling I could fly.
Through distant deeps and skies,
Behind infinity,
Below the face of Heaven,
He stoops to create me.

Dear Father, I need you,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to fly higher,
Every new day again.

Man versus himself.
Man versus machine.
Man versus the world.
Mankind versus me.
The struggles go on,
The wisdom I lack,
The burdens keep piling
Up on my back.
So hard to breathe,
To take the next step.
The mountain is high,
I wait in the depths.
Yearning for grace,
And hoping for peace.
Dear God…
Increase.
Healing hands of God have mercy on our unclean souls once again.
Jesus Christ, light of the world burning bright within our hearts forever.
Freedom means love without condition,
Without a beginning or an end.
Here’s my heart, let it be forever Your’s,
Only You can make every new day seem so new.

Happy Day – Song of the Week

The perfect song for this week I’m pretty sure!

Verse 1:
The greatest day in history, Death is beaten
You have rescued me
Sing it out Jesus is alive
The empty cross, The empty grave
Life eternal You have won the day
Shout it out Jesus is alive
He’s alive

Chorus:
Oh happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Forever I am changed

Verse 2:
When I stand, in that place
Free at last, meeting face to face
I am Yours Jesus You are mine
Endless joy, perfect peace
Earthly pain finally will cease
Celebrate Jesus is alive
He’s alive

Chorus:
Oh happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same OHH NO
Forever I am changed

Oh what a glorious day
What a glorious way
That You have saved me
Oh what a glorious day
What a glorious name

YEAHHH

Chorus:
Oh happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Forever I am changed

What a glorious glorious day,
I’ll never be the same

Pitiful – Song of the Week

I feel like my favorite songs are mostly older for some reason.  I’m not sure exactly why that is.  Perhaps it takes me a while to warm up to songs or something.  I don’t have answers for this, so we’ll just plow ahead.

This song is by a band named Blindside and it comes off their 2002 album “Silence.”  It’s a simple little song, but I like the imagery it conveys to me.

As I recall with my stomach turning
I was hiding away from myself, away from you
Like nothing, though something was terribly wrong
And I admit that I was only waiting for the right time
Night time, the right moment for you to look away
Though you never did, I pretended for a while
So I could walk where I don’t belong

And I remember every word you said
Come back in time, come back
And I remember I would soon be dead
Now so pitiful, so pitiful

But I know, as I hammered those nails into your beautiful hands
Your eyes still try to search for mine, but I look away
Now your eyes are the only thing that can save me
I’m still so afraid of them piercing
You’re breaking into my prison,
Just pretended for a while
My soul is dying
I won’t look away

And I remember every word you said…

I’ll remember every word you said
This time I won’t look away

Ooh Aah – Song of the Week

This week will be the first time a Rap song appears in this space.  Turns out, I love rap and hip hop music.  That may seem weird for the pasty red head guy, but it is true.

One of the things I like about rap is generally they say A LOT in their songs.  What I mean by that is that there are a lot of words.  They don’t always say anything important, or seem to have a lot meaning.

However, Grits is one of my favorite groups (and their songs do tend to have some thought behind them), so I picked one of my favorite songs to play this week.

I found this YouTube video of the song, looks like somebody used scenes from one of the Fast and Furious movies with it, but it’s pretty cool, so it works for me.

The lyrics are sometimes tough to sort out, but these seem pretty close:

its times like these that make me say
lord if you see me please come my way
leavin bread crumbs for when i stray
rely on sacrifice and the price you paid
feel me like a fingertip
sometimes i fall i slip
my heartfelt desire be more like you
trying not to quench your fire by the things that i do

on an island by my lonesome stranded
low key and stayin’ candid
reflect on all the things i try my hand at
search for the equations to persuasions im used to
finding comfort in the zones of closet bones i get loose to
a mountainous fontaine
spinnin and monsoonin’
grinnin’ its high octane
explosive how i came
rollin down hills cause lifes a hastle
encircled by my folly like a moat surround a castle
stay afloat catch a second wind
thin is the air i breathe
teary eyed nose runnin’
wipe the snot on my sleeve
im callin’ on my savior
to be all that i need
please forgive me
my behavior had me lost at light speed

the fear of never falling in love
and the tears after losing the feelings
of what you thought love was
like the dirt still up under the rug
bad characteristics
covered in christs blood
the joy of new birth
and the pain of growing up
the bliss between giving my all
and giving up
the highs and lows
paths and roads i chose
in the cold i froze
trying to ease my woes
in this world of sin
clothes to thin to fend
so to God i send
words of help to win
in grumblings so deep
letters could never express
so the sound of ooh aah
beneath my breath projects

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My life be like ooh aah ooh
Come young diti
Here comes that boy from the capital city
Last up on the Grits new diti
But eight bars of the truth will do, eh
I beleive there’s a bride thats stunning
And, I believe in the kingdom coming
I believe if you seek the truth,
You don’t need to look far cuz it’s gonna find you
(chorus)x2
My life be like x4
